Ali, Fear Eats the Soul
Discussion led by Dr. Hester Baer, professor at the University of Maryland. Dr. Baer served as the Department Head of German Studies from 2015-2019. She is also a core faculty member in Cinema and Media Studies and Comparative Literature, and an affiliate faculty member in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Emmi Kurowski (Brigitte Mira), a cleaning lady, is lonely in her old age. Her husband died years ago, and her grown children offer little companionship. One night she goes to a bar frequented by Arab immigrants and strikes up a friendship with middle-aged mechanic Ali (El Hedi ben Salem). Their relationship soon develops into something more, and Emmi's family and neighbors criticize their spontaneous marriage.
